About eating disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

  • 725,000 men and women of all backgrounds in the UK have a diagnosed eating disorder
  • Studies show that up to 1 in 4 of the 725,000 could be male
  • Our commissioned costs of eating disorders report in February 2015 showed that eating disorders cost the UK’s economy £15.8 billion every year.

Anorexia nervosa claims more lives than any other mental illness – many people will die prematurely from the physical consequences or suicide.

How should eating disorder sufferers seek help?

The first port of call for a sufferer should always be their GP.

The Beat helplines are available for support and information, and can give people suggestions for how to approach their doctor.
